Diabetes is lifelong, but with good control you can live a normal life. Choosing the right doctor and following up regularly matter most.
Which doctor for which situation
- Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes → diabetologist or medicine specialist
- Starting insulin or adjusting the dose → diabetologist
- Diabetes in a child or young adult, thyroid or other hormone problems → endocrinologist
- Diabetes in pregnancy → gynecologist and diabetologist together
Common signs of diabetes
- Passing urine often and feeling very thirsty
- Feeling hungry yet losing weight
- Tiredness and blurred vision
- Wounds that heal slowly
Tests you need regularly
- HbA1c — every 3 months; shows your average sugar over 3 months
- Kidney tests (creatinine and urine protein) — at least once a year
- Eye (retina) check — once a year
- Foot sensation and wound check — at every visit
- Cholesterol and blood pressure
Daily habits
- Eat less rice and sweets, more vegetables
- Walk for at least 30 minutes a day
- Take medicines or insulin on time; never stop them yourself
- Check your sugar at home with a glucometer and write it down
If your sugar drops too low
Shaking, sweating, a racing heart or dizziness can mean low sugar. Take sugar water, glucose or something sweet at once. If the person is unconscious, give nothing by mouth and take them to hospital.
