Khulna's hot, humid weather makes fungal infection (ringworm), scabies and allergies very common. With the right diagnosis, most clear up easily.
Know the common skin problems
- Ringworm (fungal): round reddish patches with raised, itchy edges — often in the groin, waist and armpits
- Scabies: intense itching at night, small bumps between the fingers, several family members affected
- Hives (urticaria): sudden raised welts that fade within hours
- Eczema: dry, rough, itchy skin, worse in winter
- Acne: on the face and back of teenagers and young adults
The danger of steroid creams
Many creams mix an antifungal with a strong steroid. The itch eases at first, but the ringworm spreads underneath and becomes harder to cure. Long use thins the skin and leaves marks. Don't use these creams without a dermatologist's advice.
Emergency signs
- Swelling of the lips, eyes or tongue with breathlessness — go to hospital at once
- Blisters all over the body or mouth sores after starting a new medicine
- A fast-spreading red, hot, painful swelling with fever
Care at home
- Dry off sweat; wear loose cotton clothes
- Keep towels, combs and clothes separate
- For scabies, treat the whole family together; wash clothes and bedding in hot water and dry in the sun
- Finish the full course of treatment, even after the rash fades
